Pergolas are a good cooling off point between two buildings or along a pathway. Usually they are built with four columns on the sides. They are connected by beams and topped with open rafters. Other design options include replacing or attaching a vinyl or cloth cover to the open rafters.
Freestanding arbors are often erected over a walkway or entrance way to a garden. The best way to identify an arbor is its structure, it contains supports on either side and across the top, which are often formed with lattice and often have curved tops. They are much smaller than a trellis or pergola.
